With All-American Cliff Berger
leading the way with 796 points, the Orphans
of 1964 won 28 games while losing only two.
The only loss during the season was to
Belleville in the quarterfinals of the
Holiday Tourney, 46-51.
They avenged that defeat later at Belleville
47-44. Come playoff time, the Orphans hooked
up with undefeated Collinsville in another
classic Super Sectional battle between the
two teams. This time, Centralia
prevailed 55-50. At Champaign in the State
Quarterfinals, the Orphans fell to Rock
Island (Alleman) 56-57 in double
overtime.
The local opinion at the time was that the
Northern Illinois style of officiating had
plenty to do with the outcome of the game.
For the season, the team outscored their
opponents by an average of twenty-two points
per game.
