Corky was an accomplished
athlete in all sports at Centralia High
School in 1947 and 1948. He played on
basketball teams that had records of 32-7
and 19-9. In track he was a high jumper and
quarter miler.
He was the catcher on A.L.
Trout’s only baseball team at CHS. The
team played in the summer months of 1947 and
were South Seven Conference co-champions
with a 12-2 record.
Corky along with fellow high school
teammates Ken
“Preacher” McBride and Harold Rush
went to the University of Maryland Eastern
Shore (Maryland State).
In the four years these three
Centralians played basketball as UMES the
teams lost one home game and less than ten
on the road.
Locke started all four years, even
though he was the shortest man on the team
at 5’9”.He was known as a set-shot
artist and had tremendous quickness and
leaping ability.
With his degrees in physical
education and recreation education,
He earned
degrees in physical education and recreation
education, and in 1969 he went to the Logan Center in
South Bend, Indiana. There he started the
local Special Olympics program and built it
into a major promotion, as participation went
from 48 that first year to well over 1,000
in later years. He became the Area Special
Olympics Coordinator and was a driving force
for the organization.
