As a basketball player at
Centralia High School, Garrett etched his
name in the record books alongside some
elite company. His career point total of
1,570 (in three seasons) places him behind
only Dwight
Eddleman
and Bobby Joe
Mason. His single season total
of 724 points places him fourth on the list
behind Eddleman (twice) and Cliff
Berger.
Named the 1995
CHS Male Athlete of the Year, Garrett
averaged 24.9 points and 8.7 rebounds per
game his Senior year, and received
Associated Press Second Team All-State
honors. The team finished 27-2 and advanced
to the Super Sectional. He also played on
teams that were 23-7 (1993, Super Sectional)
and 24-4 (1994). He received South Seven Conference Second
Team honors in 1993, First Team 1994, and
was league MVP in 1995. Garrett also
received MVP awards at the Centralia Holiday
Tournament (1994) and the Salem Tournament
(1994, 1995). He scored 23 points in the
Southern Illinois Lion’s Club All-Star
game. Garrett was also named MVP of
the 1991 Centralia Junior High Tigers 23-0
state championship basketball team.
On the
football field, Garrett was also a force to
be reckoned with. In 1993, he caught 30
passes for 675 yards and 6 TDs, and his
Senior year (1994) he caught 25 passes for
500 yards and 5 TDs while kicking for an
average of 35 yards per punt and a 43 yard
field goal. He was also named first team
South Seven All-Conference Wide Receiver.
Garrett
accepted a football scholarship to Illinois
State University where he was red-shirted
his first year. But by the time he was a
Junior in 1998, he was named NCAA Division
1-AA All-American. His Senior year (1999)
the team went 11-3 and climbed to the
semi-finals of the Division 1-AA playoff
before falling to Georgia Southern 28-17.
At one time,
he held eight ISU football records. As of
2008, Garrett still holds ISU records for
single seaons pass receptions (13), and
single game TD catches of 4 (twice). He
ranks second in the following ISU record
categories:
CAREER
- receiving yards (2,719), TD catches (22),
total catches (177)
SINGLE SEASON - catches (74), receiving
yards (1,175)
SINGLE GAME - receiving yards (259).
After
college he signed a rookie free agent
contract with the Seattle Seahawks. He was
released from that contract in August of
2000.
