With a seventh place finish at
the IHSA Class AA State Meet, the 1986 CHS
boys cross country team capped off a season
of tremendous accomplishment. The team
placed first in six invitational meets
throughout the season, including the 29 team
Mattoon Invitational.
They were second
of 18 teams at Edwardsville, and third of 42
teams at the prestigious Peoria
Invitational. The team took the South Seven
Conference title with Neal
West winning the
individual title. Nick
Schwartz was third
and Vince Schwartz fourth as all seven
runners finished in the top 20.
The Orphans qualified for the IHSA Class AA
State Meet with a second place showing in
the Sectional, five points behind
Springfield (Lanphier). West was second
individually as three runners placed in the
top 15.
At the State meet, West finished eighth and Nick
Schwartz tenth overall. Disregarding
individuals (runners who qualified without
their full team), they finished fifth and
sixth respectively and others were as
follows: Vince Schwartz 37th, Lyle Gross
92nd, Lee Gross 120th, for a team total of
260 which was 14 points ahead of Springfield
(Lanphier). The
