Becoming a state champion in the
1600m (mile) was the culmination of a
stellar running career at Centralia High
School for Nick Schwartz. The title, in a
time of 4:14:84, (1988) was the first track
championship for a C.H.S. athlete in 26
years. While at C.H.S. Schwartz was a three time
1600m champion in the South Seven as well as
the Sectional. He also ran on four
conference champion relay teams and two
Sectional champion relay teams as well as
being Sectional 3200m champion.
Schwartz finished tenth at the 1986 state
cross country meet as the team finished
seventh. In 1987, he was named All-State for
finishing seventh in the state cross country
meet.
In 1988, he was named “Male Athlete of the
Year” at C.H.S., and also received the Lew
Hartzog Award as the top track performer in
Southern Illinois. Schwartz continued his
running career at S.I.U.
In 1991 and 1992, he was Missouri Valley
Conference champion in the 1000m, 1600m, and
3200m relay. In 1992, he was named MVC
Athlete of the Meet as he set a record in
the 1000m at 2:26:66.
