Chuck
Mundell’s first team at Centralia Junior
College (now Kaskaskia College) was one of
his finest in his 29 seasons as basketball
coach. With a record of 20-5, they
were Central Illinois Conference Champions,
and they beat teams such as Harris Teachers
College in St. Louis, Vincennes, McKendree,
St. Louis University Freshman, and S.I.U.-JV.
Ranked in the top ten in the nation, they
were the eighth highest scoring team in the
country, averaging 91 points per game.
Robert Welch averaged 25 rebounds per
game. In the NJCAA Region II tourney
in Hannibal, Missouri, the Blue Devils met
Hannibal-LaGrange in the championship game.
They took a very tough loss as they fell
76-77. Hannibal went on to place second in
the nation falling by one point in the
national championship game.
George Marcum and Welch received first team
All-Tourney honors (Reg. II), and Welch was
given the sportsmanship award. Marcum
received NJCAA All-American honors as he was
the second leading scorer in the nation
averaging 30 points per game.
The team was inducted into the Kaskaskia
Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010.
