After finishing fourth in their
final year in the North Egypt Conference,
Coach Arthur Trout’s Redbirds, as they
were called at the time, placed fourth at
state with a record of 29-14 on the year. In
their four games at state, they downed
Bradley 37-31, and Champaign 41-35 then fell
to Paris in the semi-finals 39-30 and lost
to Wood River in the third place game 34-28.
A Freshman by the name of Dwight Eddleman
scored 24 points in the Champaign game to
set a new state tournament single game
record. He finished with 328 points for the
season. Onlookers were amazed that the five
starters, (Eddleman, Sam Mooney, Wayne
Harper, Charles Farris, and Charles Orr)
played every minute of all four final
games.
