With family ties here, the Massachusetts native made his way to Centralia
in 1970. Jenkins soon became an avid Centralia High School sports booster.
While mention had been made in the past that
Centralia needed a sports hall of fame, it took the push of an
“outsider” to set things in motion.
In 1981, he teamed up with Bill Niepoetter to get the ball rolling on the Centralia
Sports Hall of Fame. In short order, a committee was formed and the first induction ceremony and banquet was
held in December of that year.
Jenkins only served on the committee that first year before moving back
East. Without his initiative, we may not have the Centralia Sports Hall of Fame as we know it today.
Unfortunately, we learned of his passing in December,
1993.
