In his first season as Varsity
Baseball Coach at Centralia High School,
Donnie Walker took his Orphans to the IHSA
Class AA Elite Eight. They set a school
record (at that time) 25 wins for the season
and had only eight losses. The Orphans also
tied Marion for the South Seven Conference
title with an 11-3 record. After a forfeit win from Carbondale to take
the Regional, the team went on to defeat
Belleville East and defending state
champion, Collinsville, to win the
Sectional. The Orphans fell to Bartonville
(Limestone) 1-8 in the quarterfinals (Elite
Eight). This is only the second CHS baseball
team to appear at this level of State play
(the other was 1962). As a team they had a batting average of .322
and an ERA of 2.67. Individual leaders were:
Jamie Kell (at bats 115, hits 58, triples 4,
runs 35, batting avg. .504), Jeff Jensen
(doubles 10, HR 7, RBI 41, batting avg.
.373). Others batting over .300 were: Jason Kell
.349, Dawayne Barnett .333, and Ken Murray
.343. Pitching leaders were: Jamie Kell
(innings pitched 78.1, ERA 1.70, won/lost
8-1), Dawayne Barnett (won/lost 9-0).
