The Centralia High School
athlete wanted only to soar with the eagles.
Without a doubt, he could have been an
outstanding athlete in many sports, but he
dreamed and worked to be the best in the
pole vault.
His dream came true in 1960 as he captured
the state high school pole vault
championship with a record vault of 13’
1/2”.
Wolff also became Big Ten pole vault
champion while at the University of Illinois
with a vault of 15’ 2”.
While these marks may pale in comparison to
today’s records, one must remember, the
equipment was nothing like today’s gear
and most vaulters were falling into sawdust,
not balloons.
