A 1935 state high jump
championship (6’ 1 3/8”) while at
Centralia High School was the highlight of
his prep career. In 1934, he finished fourth
in the high jump to give the team enough
points to take fifth place in state.
He used his excellent leaping ability and
size (6’1”) to become a force on the
boards for the 1933-34 “Sweet Sixteen” basketball
team.
This team finished 30-5 and was the
only team to beat eventual state champion
Quincy that season. In 1935, he was
co-captain of the basketball team.
