Doug Schwartz
The Centralia Sports Hall of Fame
2016 Individual Award Winner


Doug Schwartz will carry on a family tradition when he will be inducted into the Centralia High School Hall of Fame.  

Schwartz will join his two brothers Vince and Nick in the Hall of Fame.

"I'm just humbled and honored to be a part of the Hall of Fame," Doug said.  "There were a lot of great athletes that came through Centralia, so I'm humbled to be a part of this class."

Schwartz was a 2000 Centralia High School graduate and was part of a dynamic duo with Justin Amason.  He was a member of the 1999 South 7 cross country championship team and that year also placed 26th at the state meet.  He won the Scholar Athlete Award in 1999-2000.  He was a three-time All-South selection for cross country.

Schwartz also was a state qualifier in track in winning the 3,200 meters at eh Class AA sectional as a senior and was a member of the 3,200 realay team that took eighth at state his junior year.

He credited a lot of his high school success to coach Rod White.

"Coach White was very influential and was like a second father to me," said Schwartz who received the Golden Orphan Award his senior year.  "He was just an all-around good guy.  Whether you were the star of the team or one of the last runners, he treated everyone equal.  And I respect him a lot for that."

Following his time at Centralia Schwartz continued his running career at the University of Southern Indiana.  Schwartz, who majored in physical education, ran both cross country and track at USI.  He ran for coach Mike Hillyard.  Both of Schwartz' brothers ran against Hillyard in high school, so the family was very familiar with Hillyard.

"He was a great coach and I'm still in contact with him today," Schwartz said.

Schwartz graduated form USI in 2005.  He earned All-Great Lakes Valley Conference and All-Region honors during his senior cross country season at USI.  He was fifth at the FLVC Championship and was sixth at the NCAA II Great Lakes Regional Championships.  He was USI's top finisher in four of the six races he raced and finished as the No. 2 runner in the other races.

Doug won the Little State Championship at the Indiana Intercollegiate with a season best 8K time of 25:08.00.  He was ninth overall at the Indiana Intercollegiate.  He was second in the University Division at the Great American Cross Country Festival and finished third at the 5K Bellmont Opener in 14:55.27.  He was eighth at the Illinois/Missouri Border Wars and had a top 10K time of 31:55.10 at the NCAA II Regional championships.  He earned Academic All-GLVC honors.

During his senior indoor track and field season Schwartz earned All-GLVC honors in the 3,000 meters after finishing second at the GLVC Championships with a time of 8:44.29.  He won the 3,000 meters at the DePauw Classic with a season-best time of 8:40.84 and also won the 3,000 meters at the Rose-Hulman Invitational.  

He finished sixth in the 5,000 meterrs at the GLVC Championships and had a season-best time of 15:05.18 in the 5,000 meters at the DePauw Invitational.  He helped the USI distance medley relay team also take second at the GLVC Championships.

During his senior outdoor track and field season Schwartz finished 14th in the 5,000 meter run at the NCAA II Championships.  He posted provisional qualifying times in the 1,500 and 5,000 meters.  He earned All-GLVC honors after winning the 5,000 meters at the Butler Twilight with a season-best time of 14:30.81.  He finished third in the GLVC Championships with a season-best time of 3;53.83.  He won the 1,500 meters at the Gerald England Invitational and earned Academic All-GLVC honors.

He redshirted during the 2002-03 cross country season.  He earned All-GLVC honors in both the mile and 3,000 meters during his indoor track and field season.  He finished second in the mile at the GLVC Championships with a season-best and meet-record time of 4:16.09.

That performance ranks Schwartz fourth all-time at USI in the mile.  He also placed second in the 3,000 meters at the GLVC Championships with a time of 8:47.84.  He won the 3,000 meters at the DePauw Classic with a season-best and meet-record time of 8:35.29.

He earned Academic All-GLVC honors during his junior outdoor track and field season.  He earned All-GLVC honors after taking second in the 1,500 meters with a time of 3:56.13.  He finished third at the Vanderbilt Invitational with a season-best time of 3:54.60, just 6-tenths of a second away from the cut-off for the final NCAA II Championship entry list in the 5,000 meters.  

He finished third in the 5,000 meters at the GLVC Championships with a time of 15:28.33.  He was second in the 5,000 meters at the Butler Twilight with a season-best time of 14:31.31.  He won the 5,000 meters at the Washington University Invitational with a time of 14:32.93.  He ran the 800 meters in a season best time of 2:02.66 at the Gerald England Invitational.  

He ranked third all-time at USI in the 800 meters, fourth in the 1,500 meters and fifth in the 5,000 meters.

During his sophomore cross country season Schwartz was one of USI's top four in five different meets.  He earned All-GLVC honors at the GLVC Championships with a seventh place finish and a 10K time of 33:27.  He finished 23rd at the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional with a time of 33:41.  He posted his best 10K time at the GLVC Championships and his best 8K time of 25:27.10 at the Indiana State Invitational.

His freshman cross country season was limited to six weeks of preparation due to an injury.  He posted USI's best time in the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional with a 10K mark of 32:44.4, finishing 16th.  He finished 13th in the GLVC Championships with a 10K time of 33:39.  He was one of USI's top three runners four times in five meets.

He didn't compete in the indoor track and field season.  He ran one race during his outdoor track and field season, posting USI's top 1,500 meter time of 4:11.63 at the Little State Championships.

Schwartz is currently an elementary physical education teacher in Mt. Carmel.  He has been the Mt. Carmel girls' track and field coach for th pat three years and was in the system with the boy's team for the previous 5 years before that.
