As varsity basketball coach for
the Centralia City Schools (Junior High)
from 1960-61 through 1981-82 he amassed a
record of 317-131. Included in this record
were six state championships: 1963, 1965,
1966, 1967, 1971, 1978; three second place
trophies: 1962, 1964, 1980 and two third
place and one fourth place finishes. After the 1977-78 season, Schmidt was named
District 15 Coach of the Year by the IBCA.
