A 1972
graduate, Reynolds made his mark on the
illustrious cross country and track history
of Centralia High School. After being
the individual champion at the District
Meet, Reynolds didn't let a recurring hip
ailment hold him back. He went
on to finish fourth as the Orphans captured
the 1970 IHSA Sectional cross country
title. At the 1970 State Meet he
placed 32nd, helping his team finish 6th
place (HOF
2010).
1971 proved to be an even
better cross country season as Reynolds
again being the District champion, placed
2nd (to Craig Virgin) in the
Sectional. The Centralia team again
took the title.
At the 1971 State Meet Reynolds
placed 29th as CHS team surprised the rest
of the state by placing 2nd (HOF
1990). The Orphans won South-Seven
titles in both 1970 and 1971. Reynolds
placed 2nd to teammate Charlie Simpson in
1971, but was unable to compete in the
1970 conference meet.
On the track he made news early
on. In 1970, competing as a sophomore,
he placed 6th in the two-mile run at the
State Meet, with a school record time of
9:27.9. He was also South-Seven
Conference two-mile champion in a meet
record time of 9:33:5. He was Orphan
Relay champion in 9:35.5, and took the
district title on his way to his state
performance.
In 1971 Reynolds set a new CHS
record in the mile run at 4:21.8. He
teamed up with Ed Royal, Mike Heitkamp and
Simpson to win the two-mile relay at the
Orphan Relay's, with a record time of
8:06.8. This was the third best time
in the nation for this event that season.
With his often ailing hip he
placed second to Simpson in the South-Seven
Conference two-mile in a time of
10:08.8. He was unable to compete in
the 1971 Sectional due to his ailment.
In 1972 he again was part of a record
setting two-mile relay team of Heitkamp,
Simpson and Stan Vannier. The foursome
set a new Orphan Relay record of 7:52.3, and
later set the school record at 7:49.5.
This record still stands.
Reynolds also teamed with
brother Ben, Marc Profancik, and Doug Seger
to set the standard in the four-mile relay
at 18:34. He captured the South-Seven
Conference two-mile in a meet record time of
9:20.2. At the 1972 District Meet
Reynolds ran a record 9:19.8 to win the
two-mile and placed second in the mile to
qualify for the state meet in both
events. At the state meet he ran the
mile in 4:24.5, but did not make the
finals. In the two-mile he placed 7th
in a school record time of 9:19.5 (since
surpassed).
