David Patrick
The Centralia Sports Hall of Fame
1992 Individual Award Winner


 

In 1992, David became the second Centralian to compete in the Olympics. In Barcelona, Spain, he finished eighth in the finals in the 400 intermediate hurdles at 49.26. He qualified for the finals with a time of 48.47.

At Centralia High School, Patrick won South Seven Conference titles as part of the two-mile and mile relay teams in both 1977 and 1978. 

In IHSA Class AA Sectional competition, he won titles as part of the two-mile relay team (1977), and as part of the 440 and mile relay teams (1978), and was individual champ in the 330 low hurdles.

Patrick finished seventh at the State track meet in the 330 low hurdles.

After high school, Patrick went to Parkland College. There he became All-American as he placed fourth in the NJCAA indoor 600 yd. dash in 1979, and in 1980 he was indoor 600 yd. champion and also national champion in the outdoor 400 intermediate hurdles.

From Parkland, he went to the University of Tennessee where he gained NCAA All-American honors.  Among his accomplishments while at UT was being a member of the championship outdoor mile relay team in 1981, and in 1982, as co-captain of the team, he was the 400 intermediate hurdles champ in a NCAA record time of 48.44, and the 800 meter indoor champ (1:49.94).

After college, he competed in meets all around the world. At the 1988 U.S. Olympic trials, he missed qualifying by three one-hundredths of a second. He finished fourth in 47.75 and was one of five runners under 48 seconds which was the fastest 400 intermediate hurdles race in U.S. track history. 

Dave is truly one of the all-time great athletes to call Centralia home.
