Moss came to Centralia High
School as head basketball coach and athletic
director for the 1993-94 season. After being
an assistant basketball coach for five years
at the University of Iowa, he decided to
return to the prep ranks. Prior to this, he rang up a record of 255-72
at three other Illinois high schools.
In nine seasons at CHS, he complied a record
of 210-53 (80%). His 1995 team made it all
the way to the Super Sectional with a record
of 27-2. In 1998, the Orphans went back to
the Elite Eight for the first time since
1964 and had a record of 27-6. During Moss’s
final season here in 2002, the team captured
third place at State with a record of
27-6. This was the first State
tournament hardware for an Orphan basketball
team since 1963.
During Moss’s tenure, CHS teams won seven
South Seven Conference titles and took a
trophy each year from the Centralia Holiday
Tournament with two titles (1994 and 1997).
He
became the first coach to win Centralia
Holiday Tournament titles from two different
schools as his Summit (Argo) team won in
1987. He holds the record of having coached
eight teams to the CHT title game.
Moss’s
twenty-two year prep coaching record is
465-125 (79%) and at age 32, he became the
youngest coach in Illinois prep history to
win 200 games. His teams won 18 of 21
conference championships at four different
schools.
He
was inducted into the Illinois Basketball
Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2001.
