George Marcum
The Centralia Sports Hall of Fame
1991 Individual Award Winner

George was an outstanding all-around athlete at Centralia High School, graduating in 1954.  Although he played in the shadow of Bobby Joe Mason, he scored 43 points in one basketball game. That tied Dike Eddleman’s home court single game record.

George gained national recognition as he played basketball for Centralia Junior College 1954-55. He was the second leading scorer in the nation as he averaged almost 30 points per game hitting over sixty-five percent of his field goal attempts and over eighty-five percent of his free throw attempts.

He was chosen on the All-Conference team, the NJCAA Region Two (IL-MO) All-Star team and was named to the NJCAA All-American team. In 1993, he was inducted into the Kaskaskia College (C.J.C.) Athletic Hall of Fame.

After one year at Centralia Junior College, George received a basketball scholarship to Kentucky Wesleyan College.  He was the starting guard his Junior and Senior years. He averaged 15 p.p.g. as the 1956-57 team finished second in the NCAA Division II National Tournament.
