George was an outstanding
all-around athlete at Centralia High School,
graduating in 1954. Although he played
in the shadow of Bobby Joe Mason, he scored
43 points in one basketball game. That tied
Dike Eddleman’s
home court single game record.
George
gained national recognition as he played
basketball for Centralia Junior College
1954-55. He was the second leading scorer in
the nation as he averaged almost 30 points
per game hitting over sixty-five percent of
his field goal attempts and over eighty-five
percent of his free throw attempts.
He
was chosen on the All-Conference team, the
NJCAA Region Two (IL-MO) All-Star team and
was named to the NJCAA
All-American team. In 1993, he was inducted
into the Kaskaskia College (C.J.C.) Athletic
Hall of Fame.
After
one year at Centralia Junior College, George
received a basketball scholarship to
Kentucky Wesleyan College. He was the
starting guard his Junior and Senior years.
He averaged 15 p.p.g. as the 1956-57 team
finished second in the NCAA Division II
National Tournament.
