Vince Holtkamp played multiple positions as a varsity football starter for Centralia High School
in 1971 (4-5), 1972 (5-3-1), and 1973
(8-2). He played Offenseve Guard,
Defensive Linebacker, Tackle, and
Defensive End.
For his talent at Offensive Guard he
garnered many accolades. For both the
1972 and 1973 seasons Holtkamp was named to
the Southern Illinois Coaches Association
First Team. He was also named First
Team All-South Seven Conference by the Southern Illinoisan
and the Evansville Courier each year. The
Southern Illinoisan also named him
to their All-Southern Illinois First Team
for both years. He received honorable
mention All-State recognition from the Chicago Daily News for 1972.
For the 1973 season, the Evansville
Courier named Holtkamp to their All-Southern Illinois
First Team and recognized him as the Southern Illinois Lineman of the Year. He received the
WILY A.L. Trout Lineman of the Year award and the
Champaign News Gazette as well as the
Chicago Daily News gave him special mention
all-state recognition. Holtkamp was also listed in the Coaches’ and Athletes’
All-American Yearbook.
He played one year of football at
Eastern Illinois University.
Not only did he show his prowess on the football field,
but Holtkamp was an accomplished wrestler at CHS. His
senior year he wrestled at 210 pounds in the
heavyweight (unlimited) division. He
was South Seven Conference Champion as well as taking first at the IHSA Regional and the Mattoon Invitational and the Murdale Tourney.
Since his playing days Holtkamp has
given back to the Centralia community by
being involved with the youth football
program for over 13 years, serving as
President for 10 of those years. He
was also Athletic Director and coach for
several years at St. Mary Grade School.
