Holtkamp
gained honors as a 211 lb. lineman for
Centralia High School in 1946 and
1947.
He received Honorable Mention All Southern
Illinois from the Southern Illinois Coaches
and gained second team All-State Center
recognition from the Chicago Daily News. The
1947 Orphans finished 7-1-1, losing only to
Joliet the first game of the season. They
scored 117 points while allowing only 33 and
held 5 opponents scoreless they were also
the South Six Champions with a record of
4-0-1.
Stan received a scholarship to
Northwestern where he played one season and
then marriage and family cut his playing
days short.
While he was a player fans may not
have heard the Holtkamp name all that
often. However, two decades
later a string of outstanding players named
Holtkamp dominated the local scene.
"Big Stan" was a member of the
chain gang for all the Orphans home games
for nearly 18 years.
