George Hails, Sr. was the best trackman in the state
at the turn of the century. He set 50 yard
dash record at 5.0 seconds flat. In
District competition Hails won at least 5
events each year in 1900, 1901, and
1902.
In the 1900 state competition he was third
in the long jump, and in state champion in
the 50-yard dash and second in the long
jump. In 1902 Hails won both the
50-yard dash (0:00.6) and the long jump
(21'8") scoring enough points for
Centralia to finish third as a team in the
state meet.
His CTHS
shot put record of over 51 feet stood for
more than 60 years. He won at
least five events in District competition in
each of the three years (1900, 1901, 1902).
