Hails
became Centralia High School’s
first All-State football player in 1927. As
a halfback, he was the leading scorer on CHS’s
only back to back undefeated football teams
in 1926 (7-0) and 1927 (7-0-1).
He scored 60 and 102 points respectively those years and his career total
of 162 points is still eighth best in CHS
history. He is also ninth best in single
season points and eighth best in career
TD’s (27).
In conjunction with winning four varsity
letters (football, basketball, track,
tennis), he participated in the class play, the debate team, and was on the yearbook
staff.
Hails graduated from Northwestern where he
played on their 1930 Big Ten championship
football team. He practiced law in
Springfield, Illinois until his passing in
1958.
