In 1950, Davies returned to
Centralia High School as a teacher and
coach. He graduated from CHS in 1943 after
having played on three basketball teams with
a combined record of 104-14 and taking third
place and first place state tourney
trophies. He also lettered in football as
the 1942 team finished 8-0-2.
As head basketball coach for three seasons
beginning in 1959-60 his teams had a record
of 77-17. The 1960-61 and 1961-62
teams each had 29 game win streaks. The 1961
team was rated number two in the state. They
fell by two points to eventual undefeated
state champ Collinsville in the
super-sectional. The 1962 team was rated
number one in the state before falling to
Chicago (Carver) in the state quarterfinals.
In 1962-63 he
was named head basketball coach at Streator
High School. Through 1970-71, his teams
totaled a record of 134-86. The 1964 team
was 24-4 and lost by six points to eventual
state champ Pekin in the super-sectional.
In his varsity
basketball coaching career of twelve years
Davies coached eight all-state players,
fifteen all-conference players, and had
seven straight years with a team rated in
the top sixteen in the state. In 1980, he was inducted into the IBCA Hall
of Fame.
