Brink received All-State status
in 1969 by placing fifth in the 440 (400) at the IHSA state track. His time of 49.7 in this event also set a Centralia High School record which he held until 1986.
He was also part of two other CHS track records. He, along with John
Stedelin, Bob Kell, and John Marvin, held the
1/2 mile relay (1600) record of 3:23.4 from 1969 to 1978, and he teamed with
Stedelin, Kell and Tom Miller to hold the half mile (800) record of 1:30.8 from 1969 to 1985. This same mile relay team captured the IHSA District (now Sectional) title in a time of 3:26.5.
In 1968 he was a member of the Sectional mile relay champion team and place second in the half mile (800).
Brink was the IHSA Sectional 440 (400) in a time of 50.3. He was named Southern Illinois spring athlete of the year for 1969.
After high school Brink went to the University of Missouri and garnered three varsity letters in track. He was a member of the school record mile relay team
(1969) and set a freshman 600 yd. record of 112.9.
He was named Missouri spring athlete for 1970.
