In
a long line of great distance runners in the
history of the Centralia High School track
and field and cross country programs, this
1999 CHS graduate and 2013 HOF inductee is
among the best!
In cross country Amason was a two-time
All-State selection, and he won a Class 2A
sectional title in a loaded field in his
senior season. For his work as a
senior Amason was named the South Runner of
the Year by the Illinois Track and Cross
Country Coaches Association.
On the track Amason won four individual
sectional titles in his career, while also
running on three relay teams that also
captured sectional championships. He
won five medals at the IHSA Class 2A State
Track and Field meets in his career, with
his highest finish coming when he took
second as a senior in the 1,600-meter
run. At that same meet, he was third
in the 800-meter run and as a junior he was third in
the 1,600 after placing seventh as a
sophomore.
After his days at Centralia were done Amason
accepted a scholarship to run at the
University of Kentucky where his specialties
were the 1,500 and 800-meter runs.
